History and Culture

Festivals, culture, villages... the Mediterranean is full of life and has endless adventures to discover with the family and is remarkably close to home.

Although Finestrat is a small town, it likes to have a lot of fun! It starts the year with the New Year’s Eve festivities after the Christmas celebrations and continues until Epiphany. Celebrations such as the Noche de San Juan, “Nou d’Octubre” and Finestrat’s main annual celebrations bring the community together. The Tapas Fair, as well as the Paella Day, do it with the magic of food, and the celebrations to welcome tourists show the friendly nature of the local people! In Benidorm alone, you will have even more occasions to attend fiestas of any age or preference, from the traditional Moors and Christians or Fallas festivals to the biggest fancy dress parties in Europe.

Near Benidorm, on the outskirts of “Rincon de Loix”, you can climb up to “La Cruz”, a giant cross on the top of the hill, from where you will have a wonderful view of “Benidorm Levante”, “Casco Antiguo” and “Benidorm Poniente” to the south. At “Cala Finestrat” there is also a hill known as “La Ermita”, from where you can get the same view, facing north.

In nearby Villajoyosa there are old colourful houses adjacent to a riverbed that flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Also, it is very interesting to visit the “Chocolate Museum”, as Villajoyosa is famous for its VALOR chocolate factory. All over Spain, you can find ‘Chocolaterias’ (chocolate shops), named Cafeterias VALOR, which sell all kinds of liquorice “bonbons”.

Also, near “Callosa d’en Sarrià”, you can visit the “Fuentes del Algar”, natural pools in lagoons with waterfalls. In summer you can take a cool dip in them.

In “Guadalest” you can visit the castle and the old town, overlooking the natural water reservoir. It is a picturesque town with splendid views of the mountains between Benidorm and Alcoy, driving through La Nucia, known for its Sunday market and antique market.

You can take a trip to the fabulous nature of Alcoy in the “Parque Nacional Fuente Roja” with its “Santuario” built on a hill with wonderful views over the valley surrounding the city.

Another place worth a visit is “Calpe” about 30 minutes’ drive from “Benidorm / Finestrat”, where you can go to the “Peñon de Ifach”. It is a landmark not to be missed.
